I smiled and looked up at him and said, “On one condition.”
Max raised an eyebrow, patiently awaiting my response.
“You call me, Lizzie. My friends do.”
He extended his hand towards mine. I looked from his face to his hand, and back to his eyes, puzzled by his action.
“I thought Your Majesty didn’t shake hands?”
“Well, this is the custom in America when a deal is made, yes?”
“One way,” I chuckled.
He motioned his hand again. “Then let’s shake on it.”
I placed my hand in his warm one as his long fingers wrapped around mine.
“Lizzie,” he acknowledged, shaking my hand.
“Max,” I murmured back.
For some reason, just saying his name out loud felt right.
